Know your life’s purpose
Knowing your life purpose is a lofty and worthy endeavor. For many years I worked with myself and with my clients to discover that mysterious and elusive life purpose. I used extensive questionnaires and varied methods of self-inquiry, utilizing both formulaic and spiritual contemplative methods. Even though this work was enlightening and valuable, I began to realize that pinning down a life purpose in one sentence was too concrete and linear to serve a person for their entire life time.
As I put out the intention to find something deeper and more meaningful about life purpose, radical takes on the subject began to come across my desk. Such as:
“There is a plan and purpose for everything. Everything is a sacred ritual. We are all living our life plan. We simply cannot not live it.” ~ Dr Sue Morter
“Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon nor too late. You don’t have to like it… it’s just easier if you do.” ~ Byron Katie
“How do you know you’re on the right path? Because it’s the path you are on.”
~ Byron Katie
“Your purpose is to be here fully, align yourself with this moment internally and to realize that wherever you are is where you are supposed to be and whatever you are doing in the now is what you are supposed to do.” ~ Eckhart Tolle See Eckart’s 2min video on this subject.
These perspectives resonated with me. I have long held the belief that everything that happens to us is for our own growth and expansion and that the more we discover about the truth of Who we are, the more we realize that the Inner Self is our benevolent parent, protector, guide and beneficiary who knows us intimately and loves us unconditionally. We come to realize that we have enough. We are enough. We already have all the answers within us. I know when I am able to recognize this and honor this, I can let go of the stories and then I don’t suffer.
I’m beginning to see how my life purpose has been revealed to me little by little as my life has unfolded. And now I don’t have to worry so much if I’m getting it right or not. I see that I have in the past and am now uplifting people with what I’ve learned from the trials and tribulations of my life.
If our purpose is to know the truth of Who we are, then that would cover everything. Because when we live in that firm belief, there is no fear. There is nothing to hold us back. We always have access to guidance and we know that everything that happens to us is divinely ordained to bring us closer to the truth of Who we are.
When we are aligned with that major truth and we have no fear, then we are free to follow our heart or our bliss, as Joseph Campbell put it. In that way, we cannot help but be on purpose!
I highly recommend Eckhart’s 2 min. video “What’s My Purpose?”
